Richard Knox
Chief Executive Officer

Richard Knox is the founder and chief executive officer of Verlume. Since the company’s inception in 2013, Richard has provided the technology focus, customer service and value-based ethos which has served as the cornerstone to the company’s achievements.

Prior to setting up Verlume, Richard had a successful career at GE where he was responsible for concept and implementation of award-winning subsea tree systems, having also led GE’s first subsea FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) team.

Richard is passionate about the commercial adoption of renewable technology and leads the company’s overall business strategy and execution. A Chartered Engineer with over 20 years of industry experience, Richard is a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and regularly contributes to energy industry events and conferences.

Since June 2022, Richard has been advising the Scottish Government as a representative of the energy sector, as well as previously being part of a Scottish Government strategic leadership group.

Jonny Moroney
Chief Operating Officer

Jonny Moroney leads Verlume’s operations with overall accountability for project management and operations within the company. Jonny is an experienced project manager with an engineering background in the design, manufacture, and test of subsea equipment.

He started his career serving his time as an apprentice at ABB Vetco Gray and over the past 20 years has worked in the energy industry across a variety of roles, specialising in the project management of technology-focused projects.

Jonny has delivered research and development projects for a range of energy operators and has also successfully delivered several energy storage and power generation R&D and commercial projects.

Alan Shanks
Chief Financial Officer

Alan Shanks is a Chartered Accountant and experienced finance professional with over 30 years of leadership across the energy and finance sectors. He has worked with entrepreneurial, owner-managed, private equity-backed and larger corporate businesses in the UK and internationally, developing a strong global perspective.

With a background in corporate finance, he has particular expertise in strategic financial planning, reporting and governance. As CFO at Verlume, Alan oversees all finance-related activity and partners closely with colleagues and stakeholders, aligning financial management with the company’s growth ambitions and long-term success.

Robert Heron
Head of Engineering & Product

With a strong background in engineering, Robert joined Verlume as one of the founding employees in 2013 and has since worked across a range of engineering and project management roles within the company.

As Head of Engineering and Product, Robert leads Verlume’s engineering team and has accountability for the Engineering and Technology activities across the business. With a three-pronged approach, Robert aligns Verlume’s expertise in intelligent energy management and power delivery with new innovations, client specifications and industry direction.

Robert has been influential in technology development within Verlume, having been the lead designer of Verlume’s first ever deployed system (the Subsea Powerhub). Now a legacy product, this system was crucial in shifting the company’s focus towards energy storage after identifying a gap in the market in 2017.

Timeline

2025
Verlume wins Company of the Year at Global Underwater Hub Awards. Cements position as global leader in subsea power management systems, with technology deployed worldwide and further world-first projects.
2024
12-month RSP deployment successfully completed. Scottish Renewables Outstanding SME Award win. Commercial orders of Charge/Halo globally, including securing rental system scopes.
2023
Halo deployed in world-first RSP pilot, off Orkney. Verlume turns 10! Project secured with RWE for OranjeWind in Dutch North Sea. Verlume officially launches Charge technology and secures umbilical cable remediation contract – deploying Charge at subsea drill centres to supply power in the North Atlantic.
2022
EC-OG becomes Verlume, reflecting growth ambitions. Verlume expands offerings with a subsea battery system for offshore wind farms. This secured a system integration award from RWE’s first International Innovation Competition. Halo wins its first Innovation Award.
2021
World-first Renewables for Subsea Power (RSP) project launched through NZTC, supported by major energy companies Shell, TotalEnergies, Harbour Energy, Serica Energy, PTTEP, alongside technology partners Baker Hughes, Mocean and Transmark Subsea.
2020
First commercial order of Halo from the US for underwater surveillance application.
2019
Halo commercially launched at Subsea Expo, Aberdeen.
2018
Recognising market gap for subsea battery storage and system integration, refocused the company’s technology solutions towards subsea batteries and intelligent energy management. Developed Halo seabed-based battery system. EC-OG turns 5!
2017
Single turbine field trial of Subsea Power Hub successfully deployed at EMEC test site in Orkney from April to September in world first offshore trials.
2015+2016
Testing results attracted further Scottish Enterprise funding/private investment totalling over £3m to complete Subsea Power Hub first field trial.
2014
Subsea Power Hub (tidal turbine with integrated energy storage) was born; R&D and onshore testing begins. Testing at Newcastle University, supported by Scottish Enterprise.
2013
Founded as EC-OG, after identifying need to find alternative routes to market for marine renewable technology, to assure their success.
