Our leadership team serves as a compass, navigating the team towards the realisation of our company’s mission and vision. Comprising seasoned industry experts, our leaders embody a collective commitment to our core values and a shared ambition for driving the energy transition.

Richard Knox
Chief Executive Officer

Richard Knox is the founder and chief executive officer of Verlume. Since the company’s inception in 2013, Richard has provided the technology focus, customer service and value-based ethos which has served as the cornerstone to the company’s achievements.

Prior to setting up Verlume, Richard had a successful career at GE where he was responsible for concept and implementation of award-winning subsea tree systems, having also led GE’s first subsea FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) team.

Richard is passionate about the commercial adoption of renewable technology and leads the company’s overall business strategy and execution. A Chartered Engineer with over 20 years of industry experience, Richard is a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and regularly contributes to energy industry events and conferences.

Since June 2022, Richard has been advising the Scottish Government as a representative of the energy sector, as well as previously being part of a Scottish Government strategic leadership group.

Paul Slorach
Chief Technology Officer

Paul Slorach is one of Verlume’s founding team members and has been integral to the company’s growth. Passionate about subsea technology and the energy transition, Paul leads Verlume’s engineering and technology development, ensuring products and capabilities are aligned with industry needs.

Paul’s background is as a mechanical engineer, with 20 years’ experience in subsea engineering in the oil & gas and offshore renewables sectors, mainly in design and delivery of subsea production systems, intervention equipment, power generation and energy storage technologies.

As vice chair of the Aberdeen branch of the Society of Underwater Technology, Paul is also a regular participant in discussions around the energy transition and the decarbonisation of the energy supply chain.

Jonny Moroney
Chief Operating Officer

Jonny Moroney leads Verlume’s operations with overall accountability for project management and operations within the company. Jonny is an experienced project manager with an engineering background in the design, manufacture, and test of subsea equipment.

He started his career serving his time as an apprentice at ABB Vetco Gray and over the past 20 years has worked in the energy industry across a variety of roles, specialising in the project management of technology-focused projects.

Jonny has delivered research and development projects for a range of energy operators and has also successfully delivered several energy storage and power generation R&D and commercial projects.

Andy Martin
Chief Commercial Officer

Andy Martin has more than 30 years of experience in driving business development and large system sales, the last 10 years of which have been in the offshore renewable energy industry.

Andy has a significant and successful track record in commercial negotiations, stakeholder negotiation and management, as well as extensive experience of leading cross functional teams to conclude and implement complex deals.

During his term at the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, Andy was responsible for the ‘concept generation to implementation’ of several multi-million-pound programmes, including the Floating Wind Centre of Excellence, the Energy Transition Alliance with the Net Zero Technology Centre, the Fit For Offshore Renewables (F4OR) supply chain improvement programme for the UK wind industry, as well as several bilateral collaborations with industry leaders.

Vivian Gunn
Finance Director

Vivian Gunn is a Chartered Accountant with over 25 years of experience, managing finances for all sizes of business from small entrepreneurial businesses to private equity backed businesses as well as large organisations, across energy and finance sectors. Vivian has extensive experience holding financial accountability of entities in the UK and around the world, allowing her to develop a global perspective.

In the role of Finance Director, Vivian has overall responsibility for all finance related activity within Verlume, with a particular focus on strategic financial planning and reporting. Vivian is an experienced professional with refined skills in partnering with people across functions, seniority levels and work styles.

Gillian Thomson
Head of People

Gillian Thomson is a distinguished human resources professional with a proven record of accomplishment from several blue chip organisations such as Mars, Royal Bank of Scotland and Centrica, and across a number of technical and specialist sectors. Gillian has a background originally as an engineer, and more recently as a leadership development consultant and coach.

Within Verlume, Gillian is responsible for delivering effective and strategic planning around people, leadership and culture, nurturing talent and promoting employee wellbeing. Utilising Verlume’s core values of impactful, integrity, innovation and improvement, Gillian works to shape inclusive growth of the people behind Verlume’s industry-leading energy transition projects.

Having joined the business in August 2023, the newly created head of people role reflects Verlume’s aim of building the team at pace to support the ongoing scaling of the company, as well as further focusing on talent, leadership and culture as critical elements of delivering on Verlume’s strategy and mission.

Robert Heron
Product Manager

With a strong background in engineering, Robert joined Verlume as one of the founding employees in 2013 and has since worked across a range of engineering and project management roles within the company.

Robert has been influential in technology development within Verlume, having been the lead designer of Verlume’s first ever deployed system (the Subsea Powerhub). Now a legacy product, the Subsea Powerhub served as the cornerstone for the pivoting of the company’s focus towards energy storage after identifying a gap in the market.

As product manager, Robert works closely with the chief technology officer to further develop products around core expertise in intelligent energy management and energy storage, to enable reliable, renewable power to be utilised in the offshore environment. With a three-pronged approach, Robert aligns Verlume products with new innovations, client specifications and industry direction.

January 2022: EC-OG becomes Verlume
We refresh our image to reflect our progression and capabilities across the energy market.

January 2022: Delivered first commercial Halo
The subsea intelligent energy storage system will be part of a world-first autonomous offshore power sea trial in Hawaii.
April 2020: Investment from Par Equity
EC-OG receives £1.6m investment from an investment consortium led by Par Equity.
April 2019: Successful system trials
Halo and Powerhub trials completed successfully.
February 2019: Halo launched
We launch Halo at Subsea Expo in Aberdeen.
April 2018: SCM power technology breakthrough
Work with SEA on first trials and breakthrough of EC-OG system with a subsea control module (SCM).
April 2018: EC-OG turns five
We celebrate turning five after half a decade of success and an ever-growing team.
November 2017: Demonstrator system recovered to shore
Single turbine demonstrator of Powerhub recovered after 230 days subsea, marking successful completion of offshore trials.
September 2017: Powerhub commercial launch
Official launch of Powerhub at Offshore Europe 2017 in Aberdeen.
April 2017: Powerhub unit switched on
Single turbine demonstrator of Powerhub deployed at EMEC test site in Orkney, first offshore trials for the system.
March 2016: Grant award and private investment
Large research and development grant awarded, plus private investment – totalling over £3m.
May 2015: SMART Scotland second grant award
Accelerated life testing of Powerhub seawater lubricated drive train concept and environmental seal system. Successful completion of test programme.
Feb 2014: Scale testing of turbine design
Scale test programme of vertical axis turbine design indicated close correlation between test results and CFD analysis. Completed at Newcastle University as part of SMART Scotland project to assess feasibility of Powerhub concept.

Our Safety Observation Card initiative gives our team members, site visitors and project partners the opportunity to submit their observations, both positive and negative. We use these to improve our operational processes and to encourage our culture of celebrating achievements.
