Reliable Power Solutions for Critical Subsea Assets

As the offshore oil and gas sector evolves, operators are increasingly confronted with the challenges of aging infrastructure.

Many umbilical cables (key to the delivery of power, communications and hydraulics) developed during the subsea boom of the mid-2000s are now approaching – or exceeding – the end of their original design life.

With these critical systems aging and more likely to fail, operators either face costly, complex exercises to find the fault, full replacement projects or risk production losses by shutting in wells. Here, innovative and efficient solutions are key to extending asset life. Verlume can provide power directly at the subsea asset – reducing risk and maintaining reliable delivery of power and communications to subsea wells.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)

CCS is emerging as an essential solution to the global decarbonisation challenge. Removing carbon at the source, through direct air capture or through underground storage of sequestered carbon at offshore locations will play an important part in the energy transition. These operations will require power at remote offshore locations.

Decommissioning

Decommissioning of assets across the industry presents significant power delivery challenges. However, it also creates opportunities for deploying reliable subsea power supply systems that can support the safe and efficient dismantling of offshore infrastructure. As oil and gas fields are retired, subsea power solutions can reduce reliance on costly vessel-based generation, lower emissions, and enable the use of advanced remote-operated and autonomous technologies.

At Verlume, we provide a reliable solution.

Our subsea battery and intelligent power management systems offer both long and short-term power delivery solutions, including:

Charge:
  • Provides power alternative for short to medium term operations (e.g. maintenance, monitoring).
  • Umbilical contingency.
  • Acts as a backup power source in the event of umbilical failure or FPSO unavailability.

 Halo:
  • Provides long-duration subsea power and systems integration.
  • Lowers operational costs, avoiding multi-year umbilical replacement.
  • Increases field flexibility, adapting power delivery as asset needs evolve.
  • Capable of integrating with renewable systems or existing infrastructure as the power input.

Case Study: Power Delivery for Insulation Resistance Challenges

In partnership with J+S Subsea and Viper Innovations, Verlume collaborated to quickly supply three battery-powered control systems for a Canadian oil and gas operator client’s urgent power delivery requirement, whilst the field’s FPSO was off-station for maintenance.

Here, the FPSO was providing power to subsea insulation protection/monitoring devices which were ensuring the electrical integrity and insulation resistance (IR) of the umbilical cables for the field. Without this, the umbilical cables were compromised and power delivery to the subsea assets could have failed.

Verlume partnered with J+S Subsea and Viper Innovations to deliver three modular subsea battery systems based on Verlume’s Charge technology. The solution ensured uninterrupted power to the subsea IR monitoring device throughout the FPSO’s absence Read case study here.
