Halo – Hawaii (North Pacific)

Case Study: Stabilising Power for Ocean Power in a Defence Environment

Client Overview:

C-Power®, a US-based ocean power company, required an intelligent energy storage and management system to integrate into its Autonomous Offshore Power System (AOPS). The system was to be deployed off the coast of Hawaii for a defence-related demonstration as part of RIMPAC, the world’s largest international maritime military exercise. The goal was to ensure stable renewable energy delivery and support autonomous operations in a remote offshore defence setting.

Challenge:

The client needed a subsea power solution that could:

  • Ensure sufficient energy supply from an intermittent wave energy source
  • Deliver autonomous power, data, and communications support for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and subsea monitoring systems
  • Operate reliably in a remote, high-pressure defence context with minimal intervention
  • Integrate into a broader clean-tech autonomous offshore power system

Objectives:
  • Enable stable, renewable subsea power from ocean energy for defence applications
  • Support the AOPS goal to reduce operational complexity and vessel dependency during extended missions
  • Enable bidirectional data and communications from supported assets to the cloud via the AOPS
  • Demonstrate the integration of clean energy with intelligent subsea technologies

Solution:

Verlume supplied its Halo intelligent subsea battery and power management system, forming a core component of two AOPS deployments in Hawaii. The Halo unit was:

  • Shipped to Hawaii in 2022 and installed on site in October 2023
  • Fully integrated into the AOPS to deliver autonomous power and data communication
  • Deployed during RIMPAC 2024, with the integrated Halo ensuring sufficient energy supply and delivery. The system was designed to enable long-duration AUV and monitoring missions

Key features included:
  • Intelligent subsea battery storage with autonomous power management
  • Sufficient power supply regardless of wave intermittency
  • Low-intervention design for remote defence applications
  • Built-in data communications capability for subsea systems

AOPS Deployment Results:
  • Successful deployment and operation during RIMPAC 2024
  • Enabled continuous subsea power and communication from ocean energy
  • Demonstrated model for reduced reliance on crewed support vessels, lowering operational risk and cost

Client Feedback:

“Halo delivered exactly what we needed: dependable power output and communications as part of this important deployment.”

Reenst Lesemann, CEO, C-Power

Key Takeaways:
  • Enabled reliable energy use in a remote defence application
  • Delivered intelligent, subsea power stability
  • Integrated seamlessly into a larger system that reduced offshore operational complexity and vessel intervention
